Powerful Tools for Caregivers will be held at Schofield Residence, 3333 Elmwood Avenue in the Town of Tonawanda, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. beginning on March 1 and running every Thursday through April 5, 2012. Other class dates, times and locations are also available.
In the six 2-1/2 hour classes, family caregivers develop a wealth of self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and health care and service providers; communicate more effectively in challenging situations; recognize the "messages of their emotions" and how to deal with difficult feelings; and make tough decisions, e.g., when a family member can no longer live alone or drive safely. Caregivers also receive a 300-page book, “The Caregiver Helpbook,” developed specifically for this program. Laura Mondello, Schofield’s director of community relations & volunteer services, and Mary Nixon, a clinical social worker in private practice, are co-leading the class. Interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming will help participants take the “tools” they choose and put them into action. “Hire a Hero” Employment and Education Fair for Veterans, VA Western New York Healthcare System will host an employment and education fair for Veterans onSaturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Freedom Hall at the Buffalo site, 3495 Bailey Avenue.Veterans know what it means to do “an honest day’s work.” They have a track record of integrity which translates into qualities of sincerity and trustworthiness. We are seeking employers, including Veteran owned, federal agencies, and privately owned businesses to participate. Veterans have the proven ability to learn new skills and concepts. In addition, they can enter the workforce with identifiable and transferable skills, proven in real world situations. Robert Sachs has been an instructor of the ancient healing arts Tai Chi and Qigong for 24+ years. He has developed a system which he calls Integrated Tai Chi, encompassing Tai Chi, Qigong, and Spiritual Tai Chi (a meditative technique that focuses on reconnecting us to the Tao (Source). All are necessary for achieving optimal health and well-being by working with the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of our humanness. Robert has worked on many ways to apply Integrated Tai Chi, ranging from techniques to enhance metabolic control and emotional well-being, to specific breathing meditations that quiet the mind and enable a shift to the Heart.
