Ultherapy® is the latest FDA approved treatment to enter the $30 billion aesthetics market. It was recently profiled on the Doctor Oz show. However it is different than other in-office aesthetic procedures. Based on well-known ultrasound principles used by physicians for decades, Ulthera technology allows aesthetics physicians to see and treat deep below the surface of the skin, without surgery.
While drawing on the same reliable ultrasound principles that physiciansand patients have trusted for decades, Ulthera’s heat currents are sent deep into the dermal and fibro-muscular tissue layers in the face and neck area. According to Hratch Karamanoukian, M.D., “discomfort is minimal and results are impressive. They include tightening and lifting around the brow, upper lids and jowls, due to collagen fibers strengthened from the 45 minute procedure. “ Dr. Karamanoukian says that patients who undergo Ultherapy® are always amazed to see significant improvement without the need for surgery.
As with other ultrasound procedures, a smooth applicator is placed on the skin, which projects an image onto a screen that allows the physician to plan where the ultrasonic energy will be delivered. This same applicator is used to deliver low levels of heat at just the right depth to achieve a positive effect, while leaving the surface of the skin undisturbed. A gradual tightening and firming occurs, resulting in a natural lift of the skin over time.
Ultherapy® is the only nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure targeting and strengthening the deep layer of tissue usually addressed in surgery. Results are noted over several months and patients are able to return to normal activities immediately. Occasionally there is a bit of swelling and minor bruising and tenderness. However, these effects usually disappear after a few days and are mild.
In the FDA clinical trial of Ultherapy®, nine out of ten patients had a noticeable, significant lift of the brow line, resulting in a more open, youthful look. Patients also reported firmer, better-fitting skin in other areas of the face and neck. Another result from the procedure is that new collagen helps to slow down the rate of skin aging.
A good candidate for Ultherapy® is someone with skin that has relaxed so that it looks and feels less firm. The “turkey neck” is also an ideal candidate. Procedures are also performed in the upper and lower face to achieve that firm look without looking like those Hollywood stars that had ‘bad face lifts’. Although it doesn’t duplicate the results of surgery, according to Dr. Karamanoukian it is a great alternative for those not ready for surgery. He is also pleased to be the only medical provider offering this procedure in the Buffalo Niagara region.
